  • "The Adair R-1 Novinger school group has lots to say about this 2 hour tour! Not a single student had a complaints about this trip. Comments ran from, "Oh my goodness...that easily ranked in the top 3 school trips I've been on" to "that trip was amazing! I never thought history could be so cool." Our students thought the guides were fantastic and interesting to listen to. The kids told me they felt they were able to ask questions and knew they would get a good response. They loved being able to wander around A-hall at their own pace and being able to explore---even though some of them were a little skeptical about the catwalks! Of course, they were speechless about the gas chamber; however, the real measure of success came the following day when we were back at school. More than one teacher approached me in the hall and commented that, "It must've been an amazing trip; every kid that went on it can't stop talking about it!" The teachers liked it too. The ones that went on this tour are considering making this an annual trip, if the school will allow. I would like to put out a special thanks to all who helped squeeze us in and work out a time that allowed us to come do this on a day you were very busy! Also, I am extremely grateful to Mr. Schreiber who gave up part of his afternoon to meet us at the museum and talk one-on-one to my students about the incredible artifacts he has donated and the personal stories that go with them. You all have made memories for our students that will last a lifetime!"

  • "This was the 4th year that I have brought my 5th grade on the prison tour and as always, it was wonderful! We are a small school and this trip goes down as the favorite for all that have gone. Students that I took 3 years ago still talk about it. So, thank you for such a great opportunity for them to experience a bit of history that is not only educational, but extremely fun and in their words "the best field trip ever!" Thank you so much."

  • "The Neosho Honors Academy would like to thank our tour guides for a most informative and interesting tour. The students really enjoyed the unique historical facts and stories that were told by the tour guide. This tour will definitely be on our agenda again in the future."

  • "The students had a great time and experience. Thank you for making a special tour for my group. In general, the students said that is was very interesting and at times some of them could feel an eerie presence. The gas chamber was commented on several times … just the experience of sitting in the chairs, etc. Again, thank you and your staff for providing this experience to my conference attendees!"

  • "We had a great time again. I'd have to say Bill was great. We heard several things we did not hear last year on the tour. His personal stories along with the photos really made the tour more interesting. I think the Missouri State Penitentiary is a great place to take a high school class. Our Criminal Justice class can relate it directly to our classroom instruction. It's a great place to tour ... hope it's always open for us to tour. If there was some way to spend 10 more minutes in the old building, that would be great!"

  • "Hello Marianne. The Prison Tour was wonderful! The kids loved it and the adults had all great things to say as well. We enjoy having the past warden as the tour guide. His stories and insight are fun to hear. We had a lot of students saying they want to have their families visit in the future. Thank you so much for all your help in planning!"

  • "The tour was wonderful! Everyone enjoyed it very much! I was just thinking on the way home...how very pleasant and friendly you all were to us. It was so easy to visit with both the tour guides...they made everyone feel very welcome. I have heard several comments from others who have taken the tour - they were all positive, but the experience exceeded my expectations! Again, it was wonderful and we will definitely be visiting you again. Thank you so much for your genuine hospitality; and please share my appreciation to the guides and thank them for a fantastic, educational experience."

  • "The tour was excellent. Our guide is a great story teller. Kids and adults alike were very entertained. None of the kids wanted to leave, but if we were to be able to stop at Central Dairy and make it back to school at a decent hour, we had to. Otherwise, we'd have been happy to explore and listen to stories for still another hour. Had we missed Central Dairy, my students may have locked me in a cell and returned home without me. I also really enjoyed talking with the tour assistant. She was wonderful. Thank you for all of your help coordinating our tour and your excellent communication."

  • "I am writing to tell you how much my friend and I enjoyed our photographer's tour of the Missouri State Penitentiary last Thursday. Thanks for your help in setting up tour and the prompt response. I don't know if you are the one who assigns the guides for these tours, but if you are, thanks for having a fellow photographer lead us through our day. Our guide was EXCELLENT! His name was Mike and he told us he had been a warden. He gave us the right amount of history, background and flexibility on the tour. It was very helpful that he was also a photographer and could guide us to certain points and offer suggestions as to where we could get good angles for our shots. Because of his assistance and knowledge of photography, we left with smiles on our faces, a card full of good shots and plans to return in the spring for another tour. Thanks again, the prison is certainly a gem of a spot, especially for photographers. As I said earlier, we are planning a return trip in the spring, so you will be hearing from us again in 2015."

  • "My name is Pam from Annville, PA. Last week my three boys and I took a prison tour and It was AWESOME!!!!! We had the retired warden as our tour guide and I was so impressed what a great job he did. My oldest boy really enjoyed it and was impressed by all they first hand info and the two little ones also said they liked it. I think being able to run in and out of the cells is what they enjoyed the most. I am looking forward to coming back in two years and seeing the other changes and improvements you make with this master plan. Again thanks for a wonderful tour."

  • "We had a great time! The students have been saying it was one of their favorite field trips. They really enjoyed the tour. The parents who were with us were very happy with the experience as well. Our guides were excellent and kept everyone engaged. It was so neat to have a warden take us through. He had so much information for us. It was a very great experience! Thanks so much!"

  • “My name is Marissa and I live outside of Jefferson City. This past Sunday I took my Grandma and 15-year old cousin on the Prison Tour. We had SO MUCH FUN! Our tour leader, Bill Green, was amazing! He knew his stuff, but I guess that’s also because he worked there for 22 years! I would love to continue to take these tours, even if it is the same thing over and over. But there’s just something about being able to be immersed in the rich history of this place. I really, really hope that this prison never gets demolished. There’s too much history there. Please keep these tours going! They are fantastic!”

  • The St. Louis and Columbia Porsche clubs certainly enjoyed the day at the old prison. Warden Groose was great. What a treat to hear all the stories he shared! Everyone commented to me how much they enjoyed themselves and how much they learned about the Penitentiary.”

  • “This was an awesome tour. Our tour guide Bill Green was amazing! He brought everything to life and made you feel like you were right there when it was all happening. I would recommend this tour to anyone visiting the Jefferson City area.”

    -Robin, April 2013
  • We really appreciate Mr. Green giving us a tour of the prison. He did a great job and the students truly enjoyed it. They found him to be entertaining while providing them with historical information about the prison.”

  • “Recently I visited the Missouri State Penitentiary with my girlfriend and her father. I would like to start by saying the tour guides were fantastic. Better than any cheap audio tour, these men knew their history of the place. I was impressed with how much of the prison we were able to see and around every corner I still wanted to see more. I really hope that these tours can continue and even expand in the funding and ability to provide a professional, fun tour. I look forward to viewing the prison again in the new future. Thanks for a wonderful, spooky, informative time.”

  • “We have toured the Missouri Pen twice this month with two different groups of friends. Both groups really enjoyed the history that this represents. Ray Miller and Darlene are treasures that make this history come alive and have many stories to tell. All 12 of us encourage all those interested to see this site and hear its story. We hope the preservationist will find the support and the financial means to maintain this site and improve it to tell more of the stories of its time in our history. Best wishes to all in their efforts.”

  • “We visited the Penitentiary in August of 2012. It was amazing! I wish we could have toured more of the housing units. We went on the 2-Hour tour and were wishing it lasted longer. We would definitely love to come back again for the longer tour. I hope you receive the funding needed to keep this historical place open for future generations.”

  • “My husband and I attended the 3-Hour History Tour at MSP today, with Mark Schreiber as our guide. We could not have imagined how interesting this tour turned out to be. Mr. Schreiber is a walking historian and told his stories so well that we felt as if we had witnessed these stories first-hand. The three hours absolutely flew by and we were sorry to leave as we felt we had more to learn. We’re already planning our next trip for the Ghost Tour. The history of the MSP is so important to the State of Missouri. To let this Penitentiary fall into ruin would be a terrible mistake. Thank so you much to those who have made this learning experience possible! We appreciate your efforts and the time you have spent!”

  • “I visited the Penitentiary on July 11th while my daughter was attending a workshop at Mizzou. I thought it was fascinating. By just touring the facilities in daylight, I can see why they say you have to be 14 and over to do the ghost tour! It was definitely creepy. With a little extra aid, you definitely could have a big tourist attraction like Alcatraz in San Francisco. I think it should be preserved as a tourist attraction. I don’t think it should be torn down due to the history and also in memory of those who were tortured and executed on those grounds.”

  • “Members of my family and I took the MSP tour today. We had Mark Schreiber for our tour guide and he is fabulous. His first-hand accounts and incredible knowledge of the history of the prison made me feel as though I had been a witness to the entire history of the institution. I had no idea we have such a valuable piece of not only local, but national, history right here in central Missouri. I can easily see this becoming a must-visit tourist stop for people from all 50 states and also internationally. In fact, we had a student from Germany with us today and she was fascinated. I see this as high priority to maintain for future generations. It would be a great crime to destroy such a valuable piece of history.”

    -Bonnie, July 2012
  • “Just returned from the tour! Fantastic! I must admit that I was only going because my mom wanted to go, but I was amazed. The stories, the history…..I needed more time there! Our guides, Ray and Gary, were great! They had my attention from the moment we started. Thank You so much for sharing this piece of history.”
