Missouri State Penitentiary Preservation Fund

Housing Unit 4, also known as A-Hall, was completed in 1868. In May 2019, an F3 tornado tore through parts of the MSP complex. Housing Unit 4’s roof was severely damaged, among other parts of the property. Support the preservation of one of the oldest standing buildings on the property by donating to this project today.

“The Walls” at the Missouri State Penitentiary is one of the oldest standing architectural features in Jefferson City. Sections of the wall are estimated to have been built between 1833 and 1835, just prior to the prisons opening in 1836. Approximately 20 years ago, reports noted structural issues with the walls; however, funding was not available to do the necessary repairs. Further damage was caused by the May 2019 F3 tornado, which ripped through the Capitol Avenue Historic District. The tornado resulted in the collapse of many sections around the property.
